Marwan Barghouti is a significant figure in the Palestinian struggle for independence, known for his leadership in the First and Second Intifadas and his political influence within Fatah and the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Brief bio

Marwan Barghouti, a member of the prominent Barghouti clan, became involved in the Palestinian resistance movement at an early age. He joined Fatah at 15 and co-founded its youth movement, Shabiba. Barghouti was a student leader at Birzeit University and became a significant figure during the First Intifada. He was deported to Jordan in 1987 but returned to the West Bank in 1993 under the Oslo Accords. In 1994, he became the Secretary-General of Fatah in the West Bank. Barghouti played a leading role in the Second Intifada and was accused by the Israeli occupation of founding the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Due to his resistance he was arrested in 2002 and convicted in 2004 for involvement in terror attacks, serving five life sentences in an Israeli occupation prison.
